Nollywood actress and evangelist Tonto Dikeh has expressed concern over the rising rate of drug addiction among young people, describing it as one of the biggest killers of the current generation.
In a post shared on her Instagram page, the actress said substance abuse was destroying lives, breaking families and robbing young people of their future.
“Drug addiction is becoming one of the biggest killers of this generation, destroying lives, breaking families, and stealing the future of our young people,” she wrote.
According to her, what often begins as curiosity, peer pressure or an attempt to escape emotional pain can gradually develop into dangerous dependence.
She noted that drug addiction affects not only individuals struggling with substance abuse but also their families, communities and society at large.
“Many young people are losing their health, dreams, relationships, and even their lives to substance abuse. The sad truth is that drug addiction doesn’t destroy only the person involved; it also affects families, communities, and society as a whole,” she said.
Calling for a shift from stigmatisation to compassion, Dikeh stressed that addiction should not be treated merely as a moral failure but addressed through awareness, prevention and access to proper treatment.
“We must stop treating addiction merely as a moral failure and start addressing it through awareness, prevention, compassion, and access to proper treatment. Parents, schools, religious leaders, governments, and young people all have a role to play,” she noted.
She further urged parents, institutions and community leaders to intensify efforts to educate young people about the dangers of substance abuse while encouraging those affected to seek professional help rather than face condemnation.
“Let’s educate our generation before addiction takes more lives. Let’s encourage those struggling with substance use to seek help rather than condemn them. Our generation deserves a future, not an early grave. Say no to drug abuse. Choose life. Choose hope. Choose a better future,” she added.
